Travel Insurance

You don't think you'll need it. Until you do.

In my book, travel insurance is a non-negotiable necessity for any frequent traveler. I've been on enough trips — and heard enough horror stories — to know that it's not just a nice-to-have. It's the thing between a bad day and a financial catastrophe.

I started buying annual travel insurance long before I ever became a travel advisor — just as someone who travels a lot and wanted reliable peace of mind. One of the biggest reasons I chose the provider I did: when COVID hit, most travel insurance policies offered zero coverage for pandemic-related expenses. But Allianz had an Epidemic Coverage Endorsement that actually reimbursed trip cancellations, delays, and emergency medical costs tied to COVID-19. Since then, I've repeatedly found Allianz to be the most reliable, comprehensive, and easy-to-work-with travel insurance company on the market. For those looking for an annual plan, this is what I always recommend. While my pricing for Allianz insurance is pretty much the same as buying directly through them, I ask that you please book through me if you're booking any travel through me — as I then get paid a commission by Allianz (and it helps keep most of my planning services free).

For those booking cruises or safaris or other multi-day packages, that provider may also offer their own insurance at an additional cost. If you don't carry annual travel insurance, I always find these to be worth the cost — as their coverage and terms are usually incomparable. If you already have annual travel insurance, this could be worth a conversation.

What Should Travel Insurance Cover?

Emergency Medical

A hospital visit abroad can cost tens of thousands. Your domestic health insurance usually won't cover you internationally at all.

delay icon.png

Trip Delays

Missed connections and unexpected overnight stays add up fast. Coverage kicks in after a qualifying delay — usually 6 hours.

Trip cancellation

Illness, a family emergency, or a covered unexpected event — get your non-refundable deposits and prepaid costs back.

Medical evacuation

Getting airlifted from a remote destination can cost $100,000+. Coverage for emergency transport is essential for adventurous travel.

Rental car damage

Skip the expensive rental counter add-on. A good travel policy covers collision, theft, and damage — often as primary coverage.

Baggage Issues

Airlines lose bags. Insurance helps you get reimbursed for essentials while you wait, and for items that never return.

Finding the Right Fit for You

From my personal experience and everything I've heard, I prefer to work with Allianz as a travel insurance partner. They offer 4 different annual plans (below), but if you only take one big international trip per year, it may be worth comparing the cost/coverage with trip-specific insurance through Allianz, which I can always help do. Please note the prices estimates below are for 40-year old residents of Colorado (at the lowest end of the trip cancellation coverage range) and subject to change.
