10 Things to Do in Bozeman, Montana (That'll Make You Want to Move There)

Planning a trip to Montana? I'd love to help you build the perfect itinerary — just reach out and let's make it happen.
Nestled at the foot of Montana's rugged Bridger Mountains, Bozeman is one of those rare towns that gets everything right. Small-town charm? Check. Wild western adventure? Absolutely. A surprisingly cool food and cocktail scene? More than you'd ever expect.
Originally founded as a frontier stop in the 1860s, Bozeman has grown into a lively university town, a gateway to Yellowstone, and one of the most exciting rising destinations in the American West. It's the kind of place where you can hike a mountain in the morning, sip craft cocktails in a retro speakeasy at night, and wake up the next day to feed alpacas. Yes, really.
I visited this past July for a long weekend, and I completely get the hype. Buzzing downtown, gorgeous landscapes, just the right amount of cowboy flair — and honestly? If the winters weren't so notorious and the airport had a few more direct flights, I might not have come home.
But for a long weekend, Bozeman is absolutely perfect. Here are my top 10 favorite things to do in and around town — whether you're planning your first visit or falling back in love with Big Sky Country all over again.
1. Wander Historic Main Street
Downtown Bozeman's Main Street is peak small-town charm: Western façades, hanging flower baskets, cute cafés, lively bars, and great shops at every turn. Stop for happy hour oysters and $3.50 martinis at Brigade, or duck into Crystal Bar if a good dive bar is more your speed. Either way, you'll find yourself looking around thinking: I could actually live here.
My move is to drop my bags at THE LARK hotel and just start walking east with no real agenda. And there’s no better place to stay in Bozeman than THE LARK, in my opinion. Located smack dab in the heart of Main Street, this trendy boutique hotel has all the coolness of the famous Austin Motel and the cozy vibes of a mountain lodge. Think:
Stylish, spacious rooms with fun local touches
Super friendly staff
Dog-friendly policy
Free s’mores every night on the patio
If you’re coming to Bozeman and want to be in the middle of it all, THE LARK is it. Book early — it fills up fast during peak season.
2. Sip Local Spirits, Cider, and Craft Beer
For a town its size, Bozeman has a genuinely impressive drinking scene — and I mean that as the highest compliment.
Start with the distilleries. Bozeman Spirits Distillery sits right on Main Street, and Wildrye Distilling anchors the Cannery District about two miles north. At either one, order something huckleberry-flavored — it's a Montana specialty and you won't regret it.
Prefer cider? Lockhorn Cider House is tucked just off the eastern end of Main Street and absolutely worth a stop. For craft beer, Bozeman Brewing and Mountains Walking Brewery are both northeast of downtown, while Last Best Place Brewing sits conveniently between downtown and the Cannery District.
If you want one spot to sample it all, head to SHINE Beer Sanctuary on Main Street. Spacious patio, rooftop seating, rotating local taps of beer, cider, and seltzer — plus non-alcoholic and gluten-free options if you need them. It's my favorite spot in the city for a relaxed afternoon.
3. Taste Local… Buffalo?!
Yes. And it's delicious.
Montana is serious about bison (colloquially also referred to as buffalo, if you're not being too technical), and Bozeman has plenty of great ways to try it — all right on Main Street:
Gute Laune — buffalo brats in a German beer hall setting
Bacchus Pub — buffalo burgers available all day, even at brunch
Copper — order the buffalo steak, full stop
Revelry — come for the buffalo meatloaf, stay for the huckleberry cheesecake
And the food scene extends well beyond bison. There's excellent Thai, Indian, and sushi in Bozeman too — it's growing fast, and I can't wait to see where it goes in the next few years.
4. Shop Main Street’s Modern Western Style
Main Street is lined with boutiques selling everything from vintage Western wear to custom hats to gold-tone jewelry you won't find anywhere else. Head West is the go-to for both new and vintage Western pieces. But my hidden gem find was Wildflower — more affordable hat options, beautiful Western jewelry (genuinely hard to find), and the cutest accessories. I walked out with a silk scarf printed with horses and zero regrets.
5. Explore the Cocktail Scene in the Cannery District
I'll be honest — I did not walk into Bozeman expecting to find some of my favorite cocktail bars of the year. But the Cannery District completely won me over.
It Will Always Be That Way leans into a retro '60s/'70s theme with creative martinis and playful bites like Pigs in a Blanket — it's ultra-fun, photogenic, and the kind of place you stay for three rounds instead of one.
Right nearby, Devil's Toboggan is a plush upstairs speakeasy with an exceptional craft cocktail and spirits selection, plus small plates like oysters and deviled eggs. Both are must-visits.
6. Try Line Dancing at Bourbon
Here's the thing about line dancing: you don't need a partner, you can learn the basics in minutes, and it's genuinely one of the most fun things you can do in a new city. A bar & restaurant called Bourbon, located halfway between downtown and the Cannery District, hosts weekly classes and dance nights that are completely low-pressure and welcoming to beginners. It's exactly the kind of real, local Montana nightlife experience that makes a trip feel like more than just sightseeing.
7. Visit Alpacas of Montana
This was, without question, the highlight of my trip — and I say that having done a lot of things I thought would be the highlight.
Just 15 minutes from downtown, Alpacas of Montana offers guided farm tours where you can meet, feed, walk, and yes, possibly snuggle their 60+ alpacas. They are soft and curious and absolutely hilarious, and I challenge you to leave without smiling. Book your spot in advance — these tours fill up quickly, especially in summer.
8. Get Outside and Hike
You're in mountain country. Getting outside isn't optional — it's the whole point.
I recommend using AllTrails to match the right trail to your fitness level and vibe. Some popular options around Bozeman:
Hyalite Reservoir — easy lakeside walks, fishing, and water sports
Storm Castle Peak — a steep climb rewarded with truly epic views
Bear Trap Canyon — beautiful riverside trail with flexible length
Grotto Falls — a gentle hike with a waterfall at the end
One important note: this is real bear country. Pack bear spray, hike with at least one other person, and make noise on the trail. It's not meant to scare you — it's just part of hiking here responsibly.
9. Catch a Local Rodeo or Fair
Bozeman's Western culture isn't a tourist act — it's the real thing. Head to the Gallatin County Fairgrounds for events like the Valley View Rodeo (running throughout summer), the Big Sky Country State Fair, and the Bozeman Stampede. All are affordable, easy to get to, and the kind of experience that reminds you why people fall in love with Montana in the first place.
Check the event calendar before your trip — something is almost always happening, especially between June and August.
10. Go on a Honky-Tonk Side Quest
If you’ve got a car (or an Uber budget), head about 20 minutes west to Gallatin Gateway. There you’ll find:
Stacey’s Old Faithful Bar – a historic steakhouse and saloon dating back to 1937, filled with cowboy memorabilia
The Westerner – a casual honky-tonk with live music and dance nights
It’s the kind of Montana side trip that makes you feel like you just stepped into an old Western — but with a whiskey in hand and a burger on the way.

Bonus: Take a Photo with the Bozeman, Montana Mural
Maybe it's just me, but I love taking a photo with a city mural whenever I'm in that city — and the one in Bozeman is beautiful! It's a 2800 sq. ft. mural on the back of the RSVP Motel, on the corner of Peach & 7th Streets. Filled with colorful flowers (and a couple of bears), it makes for a gorgeous backdrop to memorialize your trip!
